Spotted Lanternfly Alert

Spotted lanternfly (SLF) is an invasive plant hopper that feeds on over 70 species of trees and plants, including grapevine and hops. Its favorite host is the invasive tree of heaven tree, commonly seen along freeways, in alleys and even on residential and business properties. It is a nuisance insect that can multiply and infest rapidly, coating plants with sticky honeydew and the resultant sooty mold. Our Beautification Commissioner, Kelly K., spotted the first SLF insect in Grosse Pointe Park last summer - so we are on alert to help prevent their spread.

Now that spring is arriving, it is time to search for and remove their egg masses. They can be found on many outdoor surfaces, from trees to outdoor furniture, and even on vehicles. Egg masses resemble chewing gum with a gray, waxy, putty-like coating, as seen in the Michigan DNR photo. If you see them, confirm the ID and scrape them off. Once the weather warms, around May, juvenile insects may be found on plants and trees, also seen in the photo. If you see them, squish them and report.

If you suspect SLF on your property, please contact the GPP Forester, Michael Gilmore at GilmoreM@grossepointepark.org and the Beautification Commission at Beautification@grossepointepark.org. Visit the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) at michigan.gov/invasives for additional information and multi-regional reporting options. DNR pest alerts and brochures are available on the 2nd floor of City Hall.
