Short-Term Rentals
The City passed an ordinance that requires that all persons who desire to operate a short-term rental within the City must, follow all applicable Ordinance requirements, including being properly licensed.
What is a Short-Term Rental?
A short-term rental is defined as the rental or subletting of any dwelling on a premises for a term of 28 days or less. Examples include (an entire house or a single room) advertised on platforms such as Airbnb and VRBO. There are two types of STRs in Grosse Pointe Park:
- Investor-Owned STR: An STR that is not the Principal Residence of the owner.
- Principal Residence STR: An STR that is the Principal Residence of the owner.
General Requirements for All Short-Term Rentals
- No new short-term rentals may be established in a residential zoning district, regardless of if the STR is Investor Owned or a Principal Residence.
- Existing Principal Residence and Investor Owned STRs that were established before 12/26/2024 are allowed to continue as a legal nonconforming use under the City Zoning Ordinance.
- All STRs in the City must comply with the licensing requirements of the City Code.
- Occupants of an STR are required to park in any provided off-street parking spaces.
- All short-term rentals shall solely be utilized as temporary rental dwellings and may not include any activities such as yard sales, festivals, retreats, class reunions, home occupations or similar uses.

An inspection must be performed by the City as part of every license issuance and renewal.

Short-Term Rental Complaints
There are two ways to report a complaint or violation involving a short-term rental:
1 - Nuisance Response Plan Contact
Directly contact the person designated by the property owner as responsible for resolving STR complaints. This is often the owner or manager and is available by phone 24-hours a day to respond to nuisance complaints caused by their tenants. Nuisance Response Plans can be found here.
If you would like to create a record of the violation with the City you should file a Violation Report (see below). Please file a report close to the occurrence of the incident. For after-hours violations, the following day is sufficient.
2 - File a Violation Report
File a Violation Report with the City using the form below. Please answer as many fields as possible as this assists the City with any follow up. Include any relevant pictures or documents by using the upload feature. Please note, any report filed when City offices are closed will not be responded to until the City offices are once again open.
